comprehensive child autism assessment

From 3 Years of Age

about package 5

At Brilliant Minds Psychology, we’ve been helping families understand Autism for over 10 years. We know that every child is unique and our Autism Assessments are designed to celebrate that individuality while providing clear answers and practical support. Our goal is to create a neuro-affirming and supportive experience, one that helps you understand your child’s strengths as well as the areas where they may need extra help.
Autism (or Autism Spectrum Disorder, ASD) is a neurodevelopmental difference. Children and adults on the spectrum often see and experience the world in wonderfully unique ways. Some may find social communication or sensory experiences challenging, while others have exceptional focus, creativity, or problem-solving skills.
What makes our assessments different:
  • We use gold-standard tools and methods to ensure accurate, meaningful results
  • Every assessment is personalised to your child’s needs and developmental level
  • We focus on understanding your child’s whole profile, not just their challenges
  • You’ll receive clear guidance, practical recommendations, and support for school, home, and community life
  • Offers a formal diagnosis (if appropriate) that can support NDIS applications and school adjustments
  • Can offer Clinical Psychologist sign off (additional fee may be applied)

The assessment breakdown/how it works

We know that booking an assessment for your child can feel like a big step. Our goal is to make the process simple, supportive, and stress-free, so you know exactly what to expect along the way. Our Autism Assessment process is designed to give families a clear, caring, and complete understanding of their child’s unique strengths, challenges, and developmental profile. Each step plays an important role in ensuring a thorough and accurate result.
Session 1: Parent / Guardian Intake Session (2 HourS)
  • This first session is just for parents or caregivers. Children don’t attend this part. It’s an opportunity for us to learn about your child’s history, development, and current strengths and challenges.
  • We use one of two gold-standard interview tools: (1) MIGDAS-2 (Monteiro Interview Guidelines for Diagnosing Autism Spectrum, Second Edition) or (2) ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview - Revised)
  • These conversations help us understand your child’s social, emotional, and communication development through your eyes giving us vital context before we meet your child. This session can be held in person or via telehealth, whichever is easiest for your family.
SESSION 2: CHILD SESSION 1 - COGNITIVE ASSESSMENT (2 Hours)
  • This session helps us understand how your child thinks and learns. We use: WPPSI-IV (Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence - Fourth Edition) for younger children, or WISC-V (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fifth Edition) for school-aged children.
  • These assessments explore your child’s reasoning, memory, and problem-solving skills - information that’s essential for an accurate Autism diagnosis and helpful for school planning and learning support.
  • This session is completed in the clinic, in a calm and supportive environment.

session 3: child session 2 - aUTISM ASSESSMENT (1 HOUR)

  • In this session, we complete the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – Second Edition).
  • This is a play- and conversation-based assessment that helps us observe social communication, play, imagination, and behaviour in a natural way.
  • Your child’s clinician will gently guide activities to understand how your child interacts and responds.
  • This session must be done in person at the clinic.

session 4: parent/guardian feedback session (1 HOUR)

  • Around two weeks after testing, we meet with you to go through your child’s results.
  • We’ll explain the findings clearly, answer your questions, and discuss practical recommendations for home, school, and community life.
  • This session can be in clinic or via telehealth.

cost - $3360

Your child’s assessment is a comprehensive, in-depth process that involves 12 hours of dedicated clinical time, including parent intake, direct assessment with your child, scoring, analysis, report writing, and a detailed feedback session.
This fee reflects the care, expertise, and time our psychologists invest to ensure every report is meaningful, accurate, and tailored to your child’s unique strengths and needs.
A $550 deposit is required at the time of booking to secure your assessment. This deposit is non-refundable due to the significant preparation and appointment time allocated for each family. NDIS does not cover diagnostic assessments.
  • The package includes:
  • All testing sessions with an experienced psychologist
  • A detailed written report with personalised recommendations
  • Parent and teacher questionnaires (hard copy and postage included)
  • A one-hour feedback session to go through results and next steps

Medicare Referrals for Autism Assessments

Medicare provides rebates to help cover the cost of Autism assessments for children and young people under 25 years of age.
To access these rebates, your GP first refers your child to a paediatrician using MBS item number 135 for an assessment of a complex neurodevelopmental disorder (possible autism). Psychiatrists are also able to refer under item number 289.
Your paediatrician can then refer your child to eligible allied health professionals (such as psychologists) for diagnostic testing.
Medicare rebates can cover up to 4 assessment sessions. You may be eligible to receive up to $395.40 in Medicare rebates for your child’s assessment. Please note you can only choose one: Medicare or Private Health Insurance. Both cannot be used together for the claim.

What to Expect When Booking an Assessment

We understand that organising an assessment for your child can feel like a big step. Our friendly admin team is here to make the process smooth and stress-free from your very first call.
when you call to book
  • When you first contact us, our team will have a brief chat to understand your child’s needs and confirm the most suitable assessment package. You’ll then be asked to complete two short forms: (1) Screener Form - helps us confirm that the assessment you’re requesting is the right fit for your child’s needs (2) Assessment Consent and Deposit Agreement - outlines the process, cost, and booking details.
  • Once both forms are returned, we’ll contact you with available assessment dates. When you’ve chosen a date that suits you, we’ll take your $550 deposit over the phone to secure the booking (Please note: bookings cannot be held without a deposit.)
WHEN YOU ARE BOOKED
After payment, you’ll receive a confirmation email with:
  • Your assessment date and times
  • The clinician’s name and clinic details
  • A breakdown of what to expect on the day
  • Access to your Brilliant Minds assessment forms and online standardised questionnaires - to be completed one week before your appointment
These forms allow our clinicians to review your child’s background information ahead of time so that your intake and assessment sessions are as effective and personalised as possible.

not sure which assessment to book?

  • If you’re uncertain about which assessment best fits your child’s needs, we offer Assessment Consultations with our regular assessment Psychologists.
  • This is a short 50 minute, standalone appointment where a psychologist discusses your concerns and recommends the most appropriate assessment pathway.
  • The consultation has a separate fee to the overall assessment cost, but in some cases, we may be able to credit part of this cost towards your full assessment if you proceed with booking.

teacher questionnaires

Brilliant Minds Psychology provides hard copy teacher questionnaires as part of your child’s assessment package, in line with Queensland Education Department policies. Preparation of the hard copy questionnaires, handling and postage, including tracking, is included in your assessment fee. We will email you and your child’s teacher to let them know the questionnaires are on its way.
Please note: We kindly request that completed teacher questionnaires be returned at least one week prior to your child’s assessment. Questionnaires received after the date of the assessment may not be able to be included in the final report.
