Package 2: Child Sensory Processing Assessment
A Sensory assessment involves assessing how your child copes with sensory information that enters their senses on a daily basis. A Sensory assessment considers how the environment is impacting your child's behaviour across all aspects of their life. As part of this assessment, a report is provided with a summary of your child’s sensory processing profile and how your child’s sensory responses may be impacting your child’s performance in everyday life. Your child does not need to have a diagnosis to be suitable for sensory assessment, although this assessment is particularly suitable for children with an ASD diagnosis.
What problems may be suitable for a Sensory assessment?Below is a list of some of the common problems that are suitable for a Sensoryassessment:
- Easily distracted by noises/smells- Rocks/shakes- Fling's limbs around- Spinning- Difficulty holding objects- Struggles to identify the change in temperature- Your child has difficulty engaging in learning or play due to movement seeking- Your child has difficulty sustaining attention and becomes distracted by things that they can see, feel, hear, smell, taste etc- Your child requests big tight hugs on a regular basis- Your child resists hugs or touches from you on a regular basis- Your child becomes distressed in light or loud environments- Your child appears clumsy and bumps into people/objects in their environment on a regular basis- Your child actively seeks to put objects in their mouth, to smell objects, or to touch objects on a regular basis- You believe your child’s sensory processing is interfering with their ability to enjoylife, learn and play
What information will I receive following a Sensory assessment?Following an assessment, your occupational therapist will write a report with recommendations. A feedback session is conducted where your Occupationaltherapist will explain the outcome of the assessment and how this is impacting function.
What is Involved?Session 1: Session 1 is a parent intake session where background information is obtained from the parent or caregiver (1 hour)
Session 2: Feedback session – 1-hour report. A comprehensive report with recommendations is provided.
Questionnaires are sent to parent and teachers.Report writing based on 3 hours of time including questionnaire interpretation.Total 5 hours of Occupational Therapist time.
